It is commonly known as blood cancer as it occurs due to innumerable formation of white blood cells in our body. Normally, when old cells die, new cells are formed in its place. However, in cancer patients there is rapid growth of new cells before the old cells die. After some time, there is an imbalance of cells in the blood system, which results in malfunctioning of blood.

At first, the immune system is affected and subsequently the whole body is in distress due to the irregular functioning of the blood. The cancer can be caused due to inherited or genetic disorders. The other factors are due to exposure to cancer causing agents like ultraviolet rays, chewing and inhaling of tobacco and blood transfer of affected cancer patients.

Types of leukemia:

1) Chronic lymphocytic leukemia:
Due to increase of Blymphocytes white blood cells in bone marrow and blood fluid. Mostly affects lymph nodes, liver and spleen.

2) Chronic myeloid leukemia:
It mainly occurs in children and middle aged individuals. It is due to malfunction of the Philadelphia chromosome.

There are many types of treatments available to cure cancer. It takes a lot of time to get rid of the cell tissues in the body, maximum may be five years. The individual has to take total rest during the treatment.

The most effective treatments are:

1) Chemotherapy:
It is given, where the cancer cells grow rapidly and there is a chance of killing them at the base stage. It has lots of side effects like hair loss, nausea and fever.

2) Blood or platelet transfusions:
Blood and plasma has to be changed in most of the severe cases along with radiation treatment.

3) Radiation:
Painless therapy sessions given in fixed duration of time. It has very few negative effects like swelling, damage of skin and infertility. In low dosage, patients don’t have to undergo any other health problems.

Early diagnosis of the disease makes a lot of difference in effective care of the cancer patients. If it is treated in the initial stage, the patient has a chance to live longer and lead a normal life.
