Coffee is renowned for being addictive as well as producing dependency and withdrawal symptoms due to the presence of a psychoactive substance called ‘caffeine’ in it.And hence, its effects on health have been subject to array of studies.Don’t be surprised to let know it’s not just a beverage to give you wake up kick. All those sunken eyes and coffee addicts, here you have your best excuses to sip on.
1)INCREASES COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE
In certain recent studies which based the tests of simple reaction time, choice reaction time, incidental verbal memory, and visuospatial reasoning, participants who regularly drank coffee were found to perform better, with a positive relationship between test scores and the amount of coffee regularly drunk. Moreover another study showed that roast coffee has a protective effect on the neuronal cells by preventing hydrogen peroxide induced cell death.
2)COFFEE CAN MAKE YOU SMARTER
Like I said earlier, coffee doesn’t just keep you awake ,it can actually bring out the smarter you.Caffeine which is the key ingredient in coffee is the most sought after psychoactive stimulant drug ever used.It acts by inhibiting the inhibitory neurotransmitter ‘adenosine’ thereby peaking up the neuronal firing, release of dopamine and norepinephrine.
3)INCREASES PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE
Coffee due to its central stimulant action can increase metabolism and fat burning in our body cells. It increases mobilisation of fat from adipose tissue and its utilisation. In two separate meta-analyses, caffeine was found to increase exercise performance by 11-12% on average.
4)ANTI-DIABETIC
Coffee has been found to reduce the incidence of much feared Type 2 Diabetes mellitus . In the observational studies, coffee has been repeatedly associated with a lower risk of diabetes in the range of 23% all the way up to 67%. . Each additional cup of coffee per day lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%. The more coffee people drank, the lower their risk .This effect has been attributed to the compounds caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid, which are thought to suppress the formation of human islet amyloid polypeptide.
5)LOWERS RISK FOR ALZHEIMERS AND PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Alzheimers is the most common neurodegenerative disorder appearing in old age.It was surprising and fascinating to find that coffee could actually protect our brain cells.Several studies found that those who drank more coffee were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease later in life. Likewise, a second study found an inverse relationship between the amount of coffee regularly drunk and the likelihood of developing Parkinson's disease.
6)PROTECTS LIVER,PREVENTS GALLSTONE
Liver is a remarkable organ which filters out the toxins we ingest and is the main exit for cholesterol.Excess consumption of alcohol has been attributed to liver cirrhosis and hence increased occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma. The cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF) beta has long been recognized for promoting fibrosis. In a report published in the Journal of Hepatology, Gressner and colleagues provide the first mechanistic context for the epidemiological studies on coffee drinkers by showing that caffeine may have a potent anti-fibrotic capabilities through its ability to antagonize this.
Drinking caffeinated coffee has been correlated with a lower incidence of gallstones and gallbladder disease in both men and women in two studies performed by the Harvard School of Public Health.
7)ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES
Coffee contains polyphenols such as flavan-3-ols (monomers and procyanidins), hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, methylpyridinium and anthocyanidins. These compounds have antioxidative effect and potentially reduce oxidative cell damage. These are protective against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death in primary neuronal cells than green coffee. The espresso method of extraction yields higher antioxidant activity than other brewing methods.
8)LAXATIVE
Coffee is also a powerful stimulant for peristalsis and is sometimes considered to prevent constipation. However, coffee can also cause excessively loose bowel movements. The stimulative effect of coffee consumption on the colon is found in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.
9)PREVENTS DENTAL CAVITIES
The tannins in coffee may reduce the cariogenic potential of foods. In vitro experiments have shown that these polyphenolic compounds may interfere with glucosyltransferase activity of mutans streptococci, which may reduce plaque formation.
Although there are many advantages none should forget the fact that excess usage of anything leads to impairment.Extra consumption of coffee may lead to increased blood pressure, gastritis, ulcers, stillbirths in pregnancy etc.
