In today’s world of advance technology and medications, our life expectancy is decreasing. We all want to stay longer and live a healthy lifestyle. At a TED conference last year, Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, pointed out that human body should last until 90, which is 12 years more than the average American age of 78. Scientists have observed the lifestyle of the longest living people and did some research on that. Here are some secrets to live a longer life:
1. Eat Less Calories
People usually eat too much to satisfy their cravings. Eating too much and gaining weight puts strain on heart which results in heart attack. We should go for fewer calories. Cutting on calories adds on to your life. As per a research conducted by the International Longevity Center – USA, animals that eat fewer calories live about 40% more than those animals that eat large amount of calories. JAMA suggests that you should eat 25% less calories than you are eating now in order to live until the age of 90.
2. Sleep Longer
If you want to make it to 90 and remain sharp, then you must have a sound and proper night’s sleep. Though elderly people don’t need quality sleep but getting enough sleep is more vital than getting quality sleep. You must sleep for 7-9 hours in order to avoid dementia or other problems that result from lack of sleep. Therefore, getting proper sleep helps you to add on to your life.
3. Meditation
Meditation is generally suggested by every person to stay fit and therefore lead a healthy and longer life. This can help you reduce your loss of muscle and bone mass problem which occur as you age. You must exercise and meditate to avoid such problems. Exercising does not mean that you should keep moving, your body needs rest too. You must sit for some time every day and to relieve stress. Aging expert Thomas Perls suggests that meditation and prayer are the two ways that help you relieving negative stress that can contribute to reduced immune efficiency as you age.
4. Social Life
Involving with friends and family also helps you live a longer life as it gives you great amount of satisfaction with your life. Going out with friends, taking your family to a dinner, partying with friends and family are great ways to keep in touch with people and feel happy. As you feel happy, your body secrets some feel good chemicals that make you healthier and this way you can lead a healthy life and make it past the age of 90.
5. Eat Colorful Fruits and Vegetables
Merely having more fruits and vegetables are not enough. You must have vibrant fruits and vegetables in order to live longer as they contain antioxidants. These nutrients help stopping the damaging free radicals from harming your cells. Colorful fruits that you should have include cranberries, cherries, broccoli, spinach, red apples, spirulina, blueberries and grapes. You must aim to have 5 colorful fruits and 5 vegetables a day. Replacing one meat dish with a green vegetable can be a great start. You can also go for red wine and dark chocolate (both in moderation) which are good for aging and your brain.
6. Optimism
A good and positive attitude can take you long way towards living longer. Research from the University of Texas shows that positive attitude actually helps you in the aging process by delaying it. When you keep a positive attitude, the chemical balance in your body can actually change in a better way. Optimism also helps you keep stress free and adds on to your personality by making you more cheerful, confident and beautiful.
7. Learn New Things
It’s not necessary to go college to learn something new. You can learn new things sitting at your home with the help of internet or by going to some local university or an institute providing such facility. This helps you live longer. Make a hobby and start pursuing it. You can play chess, dance, sing, play games or do anything of your interest. This thing helps you develop your brain cells and make connections between neurons that are already there. Also learning something new will keep you busy and you can enjoy it.
