Farzaneh A. Sorond, lead author and member of the American Academy of Neurology, told the press:
To investigate this, a team of 60 dementia-free older people of average age 73 was asked to drink two cups of hot cocoa a day for 30 days. 50% of the participants drank hot cocoa high in antioxidant flavanol (as cocoa flavanols help circulation and heart health), on the other hand, 50% of them had flavonol-poor hot cocoa.
The Participants were not allowed to eat anything that is related to chocolate during the test. The memory of all the participants was tested before and after the set of standard tests.
These participants improved their scores on a working memory speed test. At the initial stage of test they took 167 seconds to complete the test while at the end of the test they took 116 seconds to complete the same test.
Thereafter it was concluded that consuming dark chocolate or cocoa may prevent memory decline and may also reduce blood pressure by a small amount.
