1)MEDICAL ERRORS
These are often described as human errors in healthcare.Like any other profession, doctors are also prone to screwing up.But the result would be highly outrageous unlike the others. A 2000 Institute of Medicine report said that medical errors are estimated to result in between 44,000 and 98,000 preventable deaths and 1,000,000 excess injuries each year in U.S. hospitals. Likewise, according to a 2002 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality about 7,000 people die each year from similar errors. These are associated with inexperienced physicians and nurses, new procedures, extremes of age, complex or urgent care, poor communication, improper documentation, illegible handwriting etc.

We have seen a lot of such cases, for eg. A pregnant woman named Mareena Silva  after visiting her pharmacist for some antibiotics, took one only to realize she’d just swallowed a home-abortion drug; Amy Francis went into a UK hospital to have a kidney removed, only to die when the surgeon set about extracting her liver.Similarly there are countless incidents where the doctor went wrong with the prescription.(Link)

2)WRONG USE OF ANTIBIOTICS
Antibiotics are the substances used to kill or inhibit the growth of certain micro organisms and they are of mainly two categories-narrow and broad spectrum.Their apt usage at the right time plays a significant role in the control of diseases. When a doctor prescribes a broad spectrum antibiotic  for a disease with a known causative agent for which a specific narrow spectrum antibiotic  exists, the non targeted organisms  could gradually acquire an ability called ‘antibiotic resistance.Hence, such organisms will turn into resistant ones.

Similarly, the antibiotics if not taken as per the dosage and frequency, may interfere with the effectiveness of the drug. The spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA, is the prime example of what can happen when people misuse antibiotics, according to MayoClinic.com.(Link)

3)NEGLIGENCE
This is what goes in parallel with medical errors. This is in fact a criminal offence in many countries-the doctor could be sued if an undesirable event happens due to his/her negligence.

About 1% of hospital admissions result in an adverse event due to negligence. A study suggests that, in the United States, adults receive only 55% of recommended care, also at the same time, it shows 30% of care may be unnecessary.Recent reports from around the globe depict a situation so horrendous that speak about countless number of deaths-by-neglect. Kane Gorry, a 22 year old managed to die of thirst in his bed after the staff refused to give him water and likewise another 43 starved to death. There has always been ill treatment of the elderly and the orphaned.Another  frequently observed instance will be the mix up in oxygen delivery. Can you imagine when you are craving for oxygen on your deathbed and you get high concentration nitrogen?

4) EXPERIMENTAL DRUGS
These are the drugs which are undergoing its clinical trials but aren’t yet licensed to be used on patients except for those voluntarily consent for the participation in trials. But often people are averse to chip in their cooperation either because of the uncertainty of positive results or due to fear of adverse effects. But the trial can’t wait.So what we commonly witness is that the doctor quietly asks the bedridden or terminally ill patients  if they would like to try a new ‘experimental’ drug that, though untested, just might work. The tired patient most likely nods. After all, it couldn’t possibly make them worse.

5)UNNECESSARY SURGERIES
Statistical reports show that about 10 to 20 percent of all the common surgeries done worldwide are unnecessary. It’s imperative to  bring your attention to the fact that some of the victims may have to suffer their entire lives.

Jonathan Stelly, a  22 year old semi-pro baseball player, when had a fainting spell went to his cardiologist for tests. The doctor's office called afterward with shocking news: If Stelly wanted to live to age 30, he was told, he'd need a pacemaker. He trusted the doctor and did what he advised.Months later when he was reviewed by a series of other doctors was found that the only treatment he needed was blood pressure medication and not a pacemaker. How shocking is that?So don’t forget to get a second opinion when somebody advices you a surgery.
