What do you think about the possibility of living without food and water? How many of you can resist a nice delicious meal for a yogic meditation?I know it sounds not so feasible. But just look back to the history and you will see a lot of people claiming to have lived their part of life with the energy derived from light, sun or air by awakening the Kundalini(the power which resides in every human) .This is essentially possible though we aren’t pretty convinced on the duration. But lately, a boy has become the focus of camera eyes for his so called ‘divine powers’ and clearly this is something to be debated on.
This boy whose name is Ram Bahadur Bomjon, also called Palden Dorje (his monastic name) and now as Dharma Sangha born in 1990 hails from a small village ‘Ratanapuri’ in Nepal. Bomjon is a member of the Tamang community, which practices Vajrayana Buddhism. He is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Gautam Buddha who got enlightenment through his 49 days meditation under the Holy Bodhi tree. However there has been no formal declaration by Buddhist authorities as whether he is re-incarnation of Buddha or not.
Bomjon who is the third child to his parents was fascinated about the sadhus in the street. As his parents recall,he used to be very peaceful, spending most of the time in meditation. Bomjon reportedly left home and began his meditation in May 2005 under a hollow tree, from where he disappeared in March 2006 owing to the commotion created by the crowds.Since his story resembles that of Gautam Buddha,he began to be called ‘the Buddha Boy’. But he demands nobody call him Buddha since he doesn’t possess Buddha’s energy and that he has only reached the level of ‘Rinpoche’( an honorific used in Tibetan Buddhism for a teacher and adept). His supporters however say that he can be a new Buddha and that he is on the path to enlightenment. He then reappeared elsewhere in December 2006 and continued his meditation. He is believed to have undergone fasting for more than 6 months during the year from 2005 to 2006.In March 2007,he was found in deep meditation in a ditch. He also made reappearance to speak to his devotees only to disappear again and meditate. Here are a few fascinating stories concerning him.
* His mother whose name is Maya Devi Tamang, the same first name as Buddha's mother was reported to have fainted when she found out that her son intended to meditate for an indefinite period.
* Once when his elder brother touched him during meditation state, his body became hot as fire and turned red. He asked his elder brother, “Please leave me or one of us shall die”. He further added “If anyone disturbs me or my things at midnight, I will have to meditate for 20 years, but if all goes well, I will meditate for 6 years.”
* On November 6th, 2005 Bomjon was bitten by a snake but, he continued to meditate and was able to overcome the poison. After this miraculous event, many villagers believed that he attained enlightenment.
* In addition, on November 11th 2005, a bright ray of light seemed to appear from Bomjon’s forehead while he was meditating.
All these challenged the human physical laws as well as medical science and people gathered to get closer evidences. One such attempt was made by the Discovery Channel by filming a 46 minutes documentary named ‘the boy with divine powers ‘ wherein which he was closely observed for 96 hours to see if it was a hoax and whether the boy had been receiving alternate nutrition. But to their surprise the boy barely moved and they couldn’t find a single trace of food nearby him. Also there was no sign of dehydration. An American writer George Saunder observed him through a single night, and was impressed by Bomjon's perfectly still stature, even during an unbearably cold evening.
Neverthless, since the last few years he has been losing his fame for all wrong reasons.
* Firstly, reincarnation of Buddha is not possible after the Buddha enters nirvana which has already happened.
* He has accusedly thrashed 17 local villagers who tried to disturb his meditation and kidnapped his own sister for citizenship.
* Held two women hostages for 3 months, one of whom is a Slovakian.
* He is also reported to have created a duplicated birth certificate.
* Skeptics point out that claims of surviving after several months fasting are unsubstantiated and besides the lack of proof, such a feat would be physically impossible. Bomjon was observed remaining at the tree at least during the daytime, though no one was allowed to approach him too closely. Under such circumstances, he could have eaten at night when no one could have witnessed his doing so.
* It is also heard that he was caught with a girl in a bar.
* He attacked 15 journalists. Their cameras also were destroyed.
* Bomjon has been blamed to capture 900 hector jungle and land in Halkhoriya forest by his nomadic nature.
Its highly contradictory and controversial that he preaches for the wellness of human society and is blessed with the aforementioned rumours.Atleast it’s imperative for Ram Bahadur Bomjon to ‘practice what he preaches’.In the lack of solid evidences and the reports of people like Prahlad Jani, a yogi from Ahmedabad,India who survives with energy from light,it is way beyond the debate. These could be food for an immense research.
