According to a study conducted in Japan, a famous proverb which says “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise” has been proven wrong.
In the study, which was conducted by Mayuko Kodono at Kyoto Prefectural University, 3,066 healthy adults with the average age of 57.2 years were observed and analysed.

As per the study, even 1 hour reduction in your wake up time leads to an increased risk of hardening of the arteries by 20% without changing the duration of your sleep.

The results of Kadono’s previous study, which had established the connections between dysfunction and getting up early before 5 A.M, were also presented at the 6th World Congress of the World Sleep Federation on 16th of the October 2011, in Kyoto, Japan.

Waking up early is also linked with the higher risk of cardiovascular disease. As per WHO (World Health Organisation), Cardiovascular diseases which involve heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke, may kill 23.6 million people by 2030, rising from 17.3 million in 2008.

Kodono being an endocrinologist said in his interview that “Earlier bed times and earlier wake-up times had a larger influence on vascular condition than sleep duration.”
As people go through the aging process, they tend to go to their bed early and therefore they wake up early, which influences the vascular conditions in them. The study also inferred that those who face difficulties while maintaining their sleep at nights are more likely to become a victim of hypertension.
