Why Are Your Feet Always Cold In Winters?

Filled under: ,

There are several reasons why your feet are always cold. It becomes really tough to keep yourself warm and to do your chores. The first and obvious reason behind chilly feet and hands could be not wearing socks. Your feet stay chilly because they are not covered with socks and you are walking on a cold floor. There are other less obvious reasons as well. Let's discuss them in detail.

The second reason could be poor blood circulation which implies that enough blood is not going to your feet. Proper circulation keeps your hands and feet warm. This happens due to sedentary lifestyle (think office job). You can walk around for some time each day to stay warm. Poor blood circulation can cause other problems as well like blood clotting. Don't forget to go and see your doctor if you feel that blood circulation is the problem.

Another reason for your cold feet can be under active thyroid. This is more common in women than men. Cold feet and hands are caused due to this hypothyroidism. Other symptoms are fatigue, hair loss and weight gain. If you are a patient of thyroid and are on medicines for the same but still feel your feet and hands cold then this may be Raynaud's syndrome. This syndrome involves loss of blood flow to the hands and feet due to spasms in the blood vessels.

Some people also experience a cold feeling in the feet and hands even when they are not actually cold when touched. This is called peripheral neuropathy. Numbness, tingling or burning sensations are the other symptoms of this condition. This usually happens due to the damage of nerve which is caused by diseases like diabetes, exposure to toxins, infections, or vitamin deficiencies. You should go and see your doctor if you suspect these symptoms to prevent yourself from further damage of nerve.

Whatever is the reason, cold feet are a sign that something wrong is going on. It can be a nuisance. Make sure you visit your doctor if you suspect anything serious or above issues. If everything is fine, then put on your socks and keep yourself covered.
